As requested, I'm reprinting my article entitled "EXCUSE ME? WHILE YOU'RE, UM, 'POWDERING YOUR NOSE,' WOULD YOU MIND LOOKING AT MY MANUSCRIPT? or What Not to Say at a Writer's Conference: A Mini-Manual on Conference Etiquette," here! This article has made the rounds of various regional newsletters and was originally published in Smart Writers Journal. As an attendee at many conferences now—and after having served as a member of the faculty on a number of conferences, too—I have compiled what I think are the most useful things to remember on conference day! Enjoy!

"THE LEGEND OF ZOEY chronicles, in alternating diary entries, the adventures of thirteen-year-old Zoey Saffron Lennon Smith-Jones and her flight back in time to the winter of 1811. There, in Chickasaw Country, she meets Prudence Charity Keeler, also thirteen, Pru's pregnant mother, Grace, and the Chickasaw mingo, Kalopin, or Reelfoot as he was called by the white settlers. Zoey rescues Pru and her family from certain death during the New Madrid Earthquakes and the flooding of Chickasaw Country when the mighty Mississippi River runs backwards in its banks from the force of the quakes. And by saving Pru--and helping Reelfoot meet his destiny--Zoey saves her own people in the future."

“Who’s the man on the horse?” I asked her.

     “That’s a Chickasaw chief.” Grandma’s eyes twinkled. “And that’s a mule.”

Jillian and I took one look at each other and burst into laughter. “Mule Day!” we both shouted. In sixth grade, our Social Studies teacher, Ms. Simpson, took us to Columbia, Tennessee, “Mule Capitol of the World,” for “Mule Day.” Who’d ever think of celebrating a mule?

“Why would an Indian chief be riding a mule?” I asked Grandma Cope. “Wouldn’t he be on a fast stallion?”

“A stallion is fast. A mule is strong. For a long journey, a chief might decide a mule serves him better.” Grandma smiled.

Here she comes again!

Entertainer, businesswoman, philanthropist: Dolly Parton is Tennessee's triple threat! And I had the pleasure and honor of writing about our own "Iron Butterfly" as the author of the cover story for the April 2006 edition of Business Tennessee magazine! The 2006 Power 100 issue is an annual event, and as editor Drew Ruble says, "Being named among the most powerful Tennesseans means one stands among our state's best and brightest." And there is no doubt that Dolly Parton, music legend and savvy businesswoman, represents Tennessee in a manner that is beyond far-reaching. As I say in my article, "In a hundred years, there will likely be few present-day Volunteer State power brokers remembered by the masses for their impact on the state of Tennessee . . . but people will still be talking about Dolly Parton."

Friends of my parents, Clarence and Irene Patterson, found me! The Pattersons were stationed in Germany at the same time as my folks. These photos were taken in Augsburg, and forwarded to me by the Pattersons.

Currently, I'm working on adding a couple of resource pages for both teachers and students. Over the years, I've compiled quite a bit of information about Vietnam, 17th Century England, the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812, and a number of other subjects. I'd like to share this bibliographic information, so look for those pages coming soon.
